HISTORIC STRUCTUREs
Old Cowtown Museum recreates the Great Plains and Wichita in a living history setting of the period from the later part of the 19th century. Twenty-six historic buildings, which are open to visitors for a glimpse of life on the Great Plains as it was 130 years ago, are located on the banks of the Arkansas River.
The Munger House, built in 1868, is Wichita’s oldest surviving structure. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Murdock House is a fine example of late Victorian Gothic architecture. Typical false-front commercial structures line the streets. Other significant buildings include Sedgwick County’s oldest calaboose, the first permanent church building in Wichita, and an operational grain elevator.
