Diebold safes

Last month I wrote about our latest acquisition, a Diebold safe. Today I would like to delve a little deeper into the history of the Diebold safes and the company itself. I will talk about its importance to our time period as well as the safe world as a whole.

Safety of deposits in banks is always a top priority for bank owners. The owner needs to show the customers safety comes first to gain their trust and grow the business. The more assets had, the greater chance for growth. With greater growth, the change increases for potential bank robberies. This is where safes enter the picture.

The Diebold company began making safes in 1859; it started as the Diebold Bahmann Safe Company. This Canton, Ohio business began making safes under its owner Charles. They became well known after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; of the 800+ safes located in Chicago at the time, all of them were have said to survive the fire.

Business really took off. Diebold manufactured a giant bank vault for Wells Fargo in their San Francisco headquarter. They later built a bank safe for the Detroit National Bank. Diebold became a nationally known company for safes.

And now Cowtown can be a part of this history of Diebold with our new safe. After it is cleaned up and made more presentable, we will look at adding the safe out for display.
