So Melodramatic — in a good way!
Melodrama is a form of theater that was hugely popular in the Victorian era, especially in the old west. These plays feature stock characters (usually a maiden in peril, a dastardly villain, a dashing hero) in exaggerated scenarios that run the full gamut of love, betrayal, danger, sacrifice and redemption. Misadventure ensues, with plenty of plot twists puns along the way. Audience participation is encouraged to ensure a happy ending, with the bad guy ALWAYS getting what's coming to him!
The Empire House Players are a group of volunteers who bring this theatrical art to the stage at Old Cowtown. Yes, it's true- the director, backstage crew, and cast are all fabulous (and generous) volunteers! Proceeds from these performances help the Historic Wichita Cowtown Inc Board of Trustees to support all of the museum's volunteer and educational programs while protecting and preserving the 25,000+ artifacts that represent our community's history.
